Khmera FOR eMPRESS 2015!Candidate Biography
Greetings! My name is Khmera Rouge, I'm a Cambodian and Chinese-American drag queen and performer living in San Francisco. As a performer, I focus on raising funds and awareness for local charities and community groups. I desire to become Empress of San Francisco to further serve our diverse community. My parents fled Cambodia in the '70s, escaping the Khmer Rouge and finding their way to the United States as refugees. When choosing my drag name, I decided on Khmera Rouge, a play on the name, not to cause anger, but as a way to remind people or educate those who may not know of what they did to a country and a people, helping to ensure that what they did is never forgotten. I graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, with a B.A. in Communications and minor in Environmental Science and Resource Management and I moved to San Francisco in 2010. Professionally, I have a background in internal communications and public relations, ranging in supporting various organizations and fields such as art, technology, education and non-profit organizations. I started drag in 2012 to further immerse myself in the community and have been a part of the court fundraising system since the beginning. I have held active roles, titles, and fundraised for the LGBT community of San Francisco and I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to represent and support organizations such as GAPA (Gay Asian Pacific Alliance) and the Grand Ducal and Imperial Councils of San Francisco. To date, I am proud to say I have helped raised over $20,000 for organizations that support the LGBT and API community and hope to raise more than $50,000 during my year should I be fortunate enough to be elected Empress by the people of San Francisco. I truly believe it is our duty to give back and support these vital organizations. I want to become Empress so that I may utilize this amazing platform to promote philanthropy, good will and encourage others to be aware and be part of the community. I will work hard to create a new generation of individuals who are as passionate about this organization as I am and who would want to contribute and continue the rich history and legacy of the Imperial Court for another 50 years. I will work to continuously bring in new ideas, energy, and excitement and would be honored for the opportunity to do so.
